Compare the Shinkansen, highway buses, and scenic detours between Japan's capital and its ancient heart.

Quick answer

The fastest and most popular way from Tokyo to Kyoto is the Nozomi Shinkansen — about 2 hours 15 minutes for ¥13,320. Cheaper overnight buses take 7–9 hours from ¥4,000.

Best way to travel

Take the Nozomi Shinkansen from Tokyo Station. Reserve a window seat on the right (D side) for a clear view of Mt Fuji about 40 minutes in.

Cheapest option

Overnight Willer Express buses run from Shinjuku for ¥4,000–7,000. You arrive in Kyoto around 6am and save a night's accommodation.

Fastest option

Nozomi N700S — 2h 15m. Departs every 10–20 minutes. The JR Pass doesn't cover Nozomi; pass holders take the Hikari (2h 40m) instead.

Most scenic option

Break the trip in Hakone for Mt Fuji views and an onsen night, then continue on the Hikari from Odawara — adds a day but transforms the journey.

Where to stop

  • Mt Fuji view

About 40 minutes after departure; right-hand side.

  • Nagoya

Stretch your legs; many trains hold here for 1–2 minutes.

  • Lake Biwa

Visible on the left just before arriving in Kyoto.

Travel tips

  • Reserve seats in advance during cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons — trains sell out.
  • Get an IC card (Suica/Pasmo) for the subway in Kyoto on arrival.
  • Green Car (first class) is worth it on weekends — quieter and roomier for only ¥5,000 more.

FAQs

  • Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo–Kyoto?
Only if you're doing a round trip plus other journeys. A one-way ticket is cheaper than the pass; a return is roughly the same.
  • Can I take luggage on the Shinkansen?
Yes — bags up to 160cm go overhead. Bags 160–250cm require an oversized luggage reservation (free, but required).
  • Are there overnight options?
Yes — Willer Express, JR Bus, and Keio Bus run nightly. Reclining 3-row seats are most comfortable.
