Introduction

Japan rewards travellers who plan a little — and improvise a lot. The Shinkansen makes a 10-day loop across three regions completely realistic, and the food alone could fill a separate trip.

Top highlights

  • Tokyo

Endless neighbourhoods — start with Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Asakusa.

  • Kyoto

Temples, gardens, and the historic Higashiyama district.

  • Mt Fuji & Hakone

Onsen, ryokan, and the world's most-photographed mountain.

  • Osaka

Japan's kitchen — and the best base for day trips to Nara and Himeji.

When to visit

Late March–early April for cherry blossoms; mid-November for autumn leaves. Avoid Golden Week (early May) and Obon (mid-August) for domestic crowds.

Getting around

The Shinkansen connects every major city; local IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) work on subways everywhere. The JR Pass is only worth it for multi-city trips covering 800km+.

FAQs

  • Do I need to speak Japanese?
No — major cities have English signage and Google Translate's camera mode works well.
  • Is Japan expensive?
Less than most travellers expect. Mid-range budget is ¥18,000–25,000/day per person.
